Some surgeons build a career. Others build a discipline. Prof. Dr. Gürhan Özcan has done both: over four decades, he not only practiced plastic surgery but also founded a university department, presided over a national society, represented Turkey on the international stage, and trained generations of surgeons. A profile of this depth is rare, even on a global scale.
Prof. Özcan began his medical studies at the Faculty of Medicine of Hacettepe University in Ankara in 1971, one of the most prestigious medical institutions in Turkey. He obtained his medical degree in 1977, then immediately embarked on a residency in plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgery at the same institution, completing it in 1983. Six years of intensive training that laid the foundation for a rigorous surgical expertise.
After a period as a plastic surgeon at the military hospital in Çorlu, Turkey, he crossed the Atlantic. From 1988 to 1990, he joined the Division of Plastic Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine, Texas Medical Center, Houston, as a Research Associate. He then remained as Assistant Professor until 1991. Baylor is one of the most respected academic medical institutions in the world, and this dual experience as researcher and teacher gave him a scientific and pedagogical vision that would lastingly shape his practice.
Back in Turkey, he was appointed Associate Professor of Plastic Surgery at the Gülhane Military Academy in Ankara in 1991, then Associate Professor at the Faculty of Medicine of Hacettepe University from 1992 to 1995. In 1995, he took a decisive step by founding the Department of Plastic Surgery at the Faculty of Medicine of Başkent University in Ankara, becoming its first head. He served there as Professor until 1998, after which he opened his private practice in Istanbul.
Within the Turkish Society of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery (TSAPS), he successively held the positions of Treasurer (1992-1994), Secretary-General (1996-1998), Vice President of the Turkish Society of Microsurgical Reconstructive Surgery (1994-1996), Vice President (2004-2006), and ultimately President (2008-2010). He also chaired the TSAPS Certification and Accreditation Committee from 2005 to 2009.
On the international stage, he represented Turkey as national delegate to several major organizations:
In 2005, he presided over the 9th Annual Congress of the Turkish Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, held at the Swiss Hotel Bosphorus in Istanbul. In 2006, he obtained EBOPRAS certification in Budapest, Hungary, a high-level European recognition for plastic surgeons.
Prof. Özcan has been awarded twice by the American Society of Plastic Surgery for his research work. He has authored numerous peer-reviewed scientific publications and contributed chapters to textbooks used in surgical training, particularly in the field of reconstructive microsurgery.
With over 40 years of practice, Prof. Özcan is recognized as one of Turkey's leading experts in revision rhinoplasty and abdominoplasty. His areas of intervention also cover breast surgery (augmentation, reduction, reconstruction), blepharoplasty, facelift, liposuction, and reconstructive surgery following trauma or congenital malformations.
He is a member of the three main reference organizations in his specialty: the Turkish Society of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery (TSAPS), the European Association of Plastic Surgeons (ESPRAS), and the European Board of Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery (EBOPRAS).
Prof. Dr. Gürhan Özcan currently practices at his private clinic in Nişantaşı, Şişli, Istanbul, within the Istanbul Aesthetic Plastic Surgery Center. Having founded a university department, presided over a national society, and represented Turkey in the world's leading surgical forums, he now dedicates most of his time to his patients, with the same standards of excellence that have guided his entire career.
