Astigmatism affects how light enters the eye, creating blurred vision at all distances. When the cornea has an irregular shape, images focus unevenly on the retina, producing that characteristic wavering or distorted appearance.

Unlike simple myopia or hyperopia, astigmatism involves a complex optical error. Your eye may be steeper in one meridian and flatter in another, like a football instead of a sphere. This variation prevents sharp focus whether you're reading, driving, or watching a screen.

Modern correction reshapes the cornea to restore uniform curvature, allowing light to focus precisely on the retina. Laser-based refractive surgery has transformed astigmatism management, offering patients independence from glasses and contact lenses.

Turkey's partner clinics use advanced techniques including LASIK and femtosecond laser technology, combined with rigorous pre-operative screening. Treatment success depends on your specific eye anatomy, the degree of astigmatism, and strict post-operative care.

Turquie Santé connects you with experienced ophthalmologists who evaluate your candidacy and customize your correction plan.

Types of astigmatism

Astigmatism is a vision abnormality that affects the curvature of the eye's cornea or lens. This imperfect curvature prevents light rays from converging properly on the retina, resulting in blurred, distorted vision.

Two main types: regular and irregular

There are two main types of astigmatism:

  • Regular astigmatism: The curvature of the cornea is more pronounced on one axis than the other, like a rugby ball. This is the most common type of astigmatism.
  • Irregular astigmatism: The curvature of the cornea is irregular and can be caused by injury, surgery, or a disease such as keratoconus.

Classification by focal line position

In addition to the distinction between regular and irregular astigmatism, astigmatism can be classified according to the position of the two focal lines on the retina:

Simple astigmatism: Only one meridian is curved, the other is normal.

  • Simple myopia: One meridian is myopic, and the other is normal.
  • Simple hyperopia: One meridian is hyperopic, and the other is normal.

Compound astigmatism: Both meridians are astigmatic.

  • Compound myopia: Both meridians are myopic.
  • Mixed: One meridian is myopic, and the other is hyperopic.
  • Compound hyperopic: Both meridians are hyperopic.

Causes & symptoms of astigmatism

Myopic astigmatism is a vision abnormality caused by an irregular curvature of the cornea. Instead of being perfectly spherical, the cornea has a slightly oval shape, which affects the way light is focused on the retina.

While a small amount of astigmatism is common and often naturally compensated for by our eyes, a larger amount of myopic astigmatism can cause blurred vision and troublesome symptoms.

Some of the most common symptoms of myopic astigmatism include:

  • Eye fatigue.
  • Burning in the eyes.
  • Eye pain.
  • Lachrymation.
  • Headache.
  • Double vision.
  • Blurred vision, especially of near and distant objects.

Diagnosis of astigmatism in Turkey

In Turkey, experienced ophthalmologists use state-of-the-art diagnostic tools to accurately identify astigmatism, even in the most complex cases.

During a comprehensive eye exam, your eye doctor in Turkey will use several techniques to diagnose and measure the degree of astigmatism. These may include:

  • A refraction examination: Using different lenses to determine the strength and type of vision correction needed.
  • Corneal topography (photokeratoscopy): Computerized mapping of corneal curvature to identify irregularities and the type of astigmatism.
  • Slit lamp examination: Detailed evaluation of the surface and interior of the eye to rule out other conditions.

Astigmatism can coexist with other refractive errors, such as myopia (nearsightedness) or hyperopia (farsightedness). In such cases, your eye doctor will prescribe a combined correction to correct both problems at the same time.

Astigmatism correction techniques in Turkey

Forget astigmatism and enjoy clear, crisp vision!

Whether you're looking for a temporary or permanent solution, our expert ophthalmologists in Turkey provide comprehensive care for astigmatism.

We offer several effective options to suit your needs and lifestyle:

Temporary correction

  • Glasses: Cylindrical or toric lenses are prescribed to compensate for the irregular curvature of the cornea and improve light focusing.
  • Contact lenses: Specially designed toric contact lenses can provide clear, comfortable vision for people with astigmatism.

The success of temporary correction depends on strict eye and contact lens hygiene. Our doctors of optometry can give you all the advice you need to keep your eyes healthy.

Permanent correction

Refractive surgery, usually involving laser procedures, can reshape the cornea to permanently correct astigmatism, reducing or eliminating the need for glasses or contact lenses. These procedures include:

  • Femto-Lasik: This state-of-the-art technique uses the latest generation of lasers to reshape the cornea with unmatched precision and safety.
  • Femtosecond and Excimer lasers: The combination of these two technologies provides precise, long-lasting correction of astigmatism, even in moderate to severe cases.

Advantages of the Femto-Lasik technique

Say goodbye to glasses and contact lenses with Femto-Lasik, a revolutionary procedure for correcting astigmatism.

Fast, safe and painless, this procedure offers many advantages:

  • Duration: Just a few minutes to correct your astigmatism, all on an outpatient basis.
  • Reliability: Precision and safety are guaranteed for optimal results.
  • Comfort: No more pain! A few drops of anesthetic and you're done.
  • Safety: Minimize pre- and post-operative risks.
  • Fast recovery: Say hello to clear vision the very next day!
