What is a dental prosthesis and which type do you need?

A dental prosthesis is any device designed to replace one or more missing teeth and restore the function and appearance of your natural dentition. The right solution for you depends on how many teeth are missing, the condition of your jawbone and gums, your budget, and your preference for a fixed or removable result.

There are two broad categories:

  • Fixed prostheses are bonded or implanted permanently and cannot be removed at home. They include crowns, dental bridges, implant-supported crowns, and All-on-4 or All-on-6 full-arch restorations.
  • Removable prostheses can be taken out for cleaning. They include partial dentures (for a few missing teeth) and complete dentures (when all teeth in one or both arches are missing).

A specialist in prosthodontics will assess your bone density, gum health, and bite alignment before recommending the most appropriate solution. In many cases, the choice between a traditional prosthesis and an implant-supported one significantly affects both the outcome and the long-term cost.

What materials are used for dental prostheses in Turkey?

The material used determines the longevity, aesthetics, and price of your prosthesis. Turkish dental laboratories work with the full range of internationally approved materials:

  • Zirconia (zirconium oxide): The gold standard for fixed prostheses. Zirconia is exceptionally strong (fracture resistance of 900-1,200 MPa),translucent enough to mimic natural enamel, and fully biocompatible, meaning the gum tissue around it stays healthy over time. It does not stain, corrode, or trigger allergic reactions. Recommended for crowns, bridges, and implant-supported restorations where aesthetics matter most.
  • Full ceramic (Emax / lithium disilicate): Offers the highest aesthetic result of any material, with light transmission very close to natural teeth. Emax is preferred for front teeth veneers and single anterior crowns. It is slightly less strong than zirconia, making it less suitable for back teeth under heavy chewing loads.
  • Metal-ceramic (porcelain-fused-to-metal): A long-established, durable option. A metal substructure gives strength; a porcelain overlay provides the aesthetic surface. The main drawback is that a thin grey line can become visible at the gum margin over time as the gum naturally recedes. Used frequently for bridges.
  • Acrylic resin: The most affordable material. Used primarily for complete removable dentures and temporary prostheses while implants are healing. Acrylic is lightweight but less durable; it can crack under heavy bite forces and typically needs replacement after 5-8 years.
  • Flexible resin (thermoplastic nylon): A newer alternative to traditional acrylic partials. More comfortable and less visible than metal-clasp dentures, though not suitable for every clinical situation.

What are the different types of dental prostheses available in Turkey?

Not all missing teeth require the same solution. The most suitable dental prosthesis depends on how many teeth are missing, the condition of your remaining teeth and gums, the amount of available bone, and your long-term expectations. In Turkey, dental clinics offer a wide range of fixed and removable prosthetic options, allowing treatment plans to be tailored to each patient's needs and lifestyle.

Fixed dental prostheses

  • Dental crowns: A crown is a cap that fits over a damaged, weakened, or treated natural tooth. It is also used to top a dental implant. In Turkey, crowns are typically made from zirconia or Emax ceramic, both of which are milled in-house using CAD/CAM technology in the better-equipped clinics, ensuring a precise fit and natural appearance.
  • Dental bridges: A bridge replaces one or two missing teeth by anchoring artificial teeth to the natural teeth (or implants) on either side of the gap. The three-unit bridge, one replacement tooth flanked by two crowns, is the most common type. If the gap is not filled, neighboring teeth gradually shift, increasing the risk of bone loss and periodontitis (gum disease affecting the bone).
  • Implant-supported prostheses (All-on-4 / All-on-6 / All-on-8): When several or all teeth in an arch are missing, a fixed prosthesis supported by four, six, or eight implants offers a permanent, non-removable solution. The implants are placed surgically into the jawbone; once healed (typically 3-6 months),a full-arch bridge is attached. All-on-4 uses angled implants to maximize use of available bone, often avoiding the need for bone grafting.
  • Zirconia veneers: Thin shells bonded to the front surface of the teeth to correct color, shape, or alignment. Not technically a "prosthesis" in the replacement sense, but often combined with crown and bridge work in full smile makeover plans.

Removable dental prostheses

  • Partial dentures: For patients who are missing several (but not all) teeth, partial dentures clip onto existing natural teeth using metal or flexible clasps. They are a more affordable entry point, though less stable than implant-supported solutions.
  • Complete dentures: When all the teeth in one or both arches are missing, and implant placement is not medically possible (due to insufficient bone density or other health factors),complete dentures provide a functional and affordable solution. Modern dentures in Turkey are fabricated using digital workflows that allow precise customization of the bite and aesthetics.

How does Turquie Santé work for dental prosthesis treatment?

Turquie Santé is a Global Healthcare Accreditation (GHA)-certified medical travel facilitator, the international gold standard for medical tourism organizations. Since 2018, the platform has processed more than 600,000 patient requests and supported over 1.6 million users in organizing their medical care in Turkey. It is not a clinic itself; it is a regulated intermediary covered by professional liability insurance (SAI),which means your interests are protected throughout the process.

Here is what the process looks like in practice:

  • Step 1: Free online consultation: Submit your request via the website or WhatsApp. A patient coordinator (available 7 days a week, 8 am-8 pm) reviews your case and asks for relevant dental records or panoramic X-rays.
  • Step 2: Personalized care plan and quote: Within 24 - 48 hours, you receive a detailed quote including the recommended procedure, the clinic's certification status, the treating dentist's credentials and experience, and an itemized breakdown of costs, with no hidden commission.
  • Step 3: Appointment and travel organization: Once you confirm, the team handles appointment scheduling, assists with visa documentation if needed, arranges VIP airport transfers, and coordinates your hotel stay.
  • Step 4: Treatment in Turkey: Most dental prosthesis procedures involve at least two visits: the first for preparation, impressions (or digital scans),and fitting of temporaries; the second, typically 5-7 days later for crowns and bridges, or 3-6 months later for implant-supported cases, for the final fitting.
  • Step 5: Continued aftercare from home: After you return, your treating dentist remains accessible via video consultation or message. In the event of any complication, Turquie Santé's clinical team coordinates with the clinic and, if necessary, arranges a return visit under the warranty terms.

What are the warranty and guarantee conditions?

Warranty terms vary by clinic, so it is important to confirm in writing before treatment. As a general benchmark for accredited clinics in the Turquie Santé network:

  • Implants: typically covered by the manufacturer's lifetime guarantee (for brands such as Straumann or Nobel Biocare) plus a clinic warranty of 5-10 years against failure due to clinical error.
  • Zirconia and ceramic crowns/bridges: typically 5-10 years against fracture or debonding when used as directed.
  • Acrylic dentures: 1-2 years; these are considered consumable restorations with a natural service life.

Warranty conditions generally require that you attend the recommended follow-up appointments (remote consultations count),do not smoke, and maintain good oral hygiene. Damage caused by trauma or neglect is typically excluded.

What are the risks and how are they managed?

All dental procedures carry some degree of risk, and an honest assessment is part of responsible care planning. For dental prostheses specifically:

  • Temporary sensitivity is common after crown preparation, usually resolving within 2-4 weeks as the pulp settles.
  • Prosthesis failure or fracture: can occur if the material is subjected to forces it is not designed for (such as biting hard objects or grinding teeth without a night guard).
  • Implant failure: affects roughly 2-5% of patients globally, with higher rates in smokers, uncontrolled diabetics, or those with significant bone loss. Choosing a clinic with documented implant success rates and using established brands significantly reduces this risk.
  • Poor fit or bite problems are minimized by digital impression technology and experienced prosthodontists. If a problem is identified at the fitting, adjustments are made before you leave.
  • Infection: is rare when sterile protocols are followed. JCI and ISO-certified clinics in Turkey operate under sterilization standards equivalent to those in Western Europe.

Turquie Santé's patient safety program includes complication management protocols and emergency case support.
