Buttock lift: Who is it for?
A buttock lift is a surgical procedure to reshape and improve the contour of the buttocks. This technique is for people who want to:
- Correct sagging of the buttocks due to age, significant weight loss, or hereditary factors.
- Improve the tone and firmness of the buttock skin.
- Restore volume to the buttocks for a more contoured silhouette.
Buttock lift techniques
The technique used for buttock lift varies depending on the patient's goals and the condition of the buttocks.
- Upper buttock lift: This type of lift is designed for buttocks with sagging skin over the entire surface. The technique involves removing excess skin from the interfessial crease, then repositioning and tightening the remaining skin to lift and reshape the entire buttock. A scar is created, usually from the top of the buttocks to the bottom of the gluteal fold.
- Lower buttock lift: This technique is best for buttocks with sagging skin in the lower part, below the gluteal fold. Excess skin is removed at the level of the gluteal fold, and the remaining skin is tightened to redefine the gluteal fold and enhance the lower buttocks. Scars are discreetly hidden in the gluteal cleft. It is ideal for patients who want a smaller but more targeted correction.
The choice between these two techniques depends on the plastic surgeon's individual assessment of each patient, depending on the degree of skin laxity and the desired goals.
Principle of buttock lift
A buttock lift is performed under general anesthesia, either on an outpatient basis or with a short hospital stay. The procedure lasts between 1 and 3 hours, depending on the extent of the corrections.
The idea of a buttock lift is to remove a spindle of skin and fat from the buttocks before lifting them. This tightens the buttocks and reduces the appearance of cellulite caused by sagging skin. Liposuction is often used to improve the contour of the buttocks.
If the buttocks lack volume, buttock lipofilling may be performed. In this technique, the fat removed during the facelift is reintroduced into the buttocks instead of being projected onto them. The result is a more harmonious buttock contour and a rounder shape.
A buttock lift can be combined with a body lift to completely reshape the silhouette, especially in cases of significant weight loss.
Postoperative care
The postoperative course of a buttock lift is generally uncomplicated and allows for a quick recovery. Moderate pain may be experienced, but this can be easily controlled with painkillers.
For the first seven days after surgery, it is important to limit sitting and bending forward. Wearing a support panty for 15 days is also recommended to aid healing. Anticoagulants are also prescribed to prevent the formation of blood clots. The patient must undergo regular nursing care to avoid possible complications. The stitches used are absorbable and do not need to be removed.
Swelling and bruising are common in the weeks following surgery and often disappear within two weeks. Return to work is possible after 7 to 14 days, while resumption of physical activities may take up to six weeks.
