The thyroid gland is located in the anterior center of the neck. It has the shape of a butterfly that connects the two lobes in the middle. A thyroid biopsy involves taking samples of fluid and cells from a nodule in the thyroid gland using small, fine-needle aspiration.

Imaging techniques like ultrasonography and Doppler are typically used to find thyroid nodules and other abnormalities. Sometimes it is difficult to determine if a nodule is benign or not.

Thyroid Biopsy : Cost in Turkey

A thyroid biopsy aims to remove pieces of tissue from an abnormal thyroid gland through a needle in the skin. The removed tissue is inspected by a pathologist under a microscope in the laboratory to identify whether the lesion is cancerous or not. Thus, the pathologist will determine the nature of this lesion and guide the doctor on the choice of adequate treatment. However, it should be noted that biopsies are diagnostic and treatment procedures.

Preparation for fine-needle aspiration

For diagnosis, it is advisable to mention any allergy, and any treatment such as anticoagulants, anti-inflammatories, aspirin, and other blood-thinning drugs.
The pre-biopsy consultation is mandatory. This consultation allows the doctor to locate the lesions and verify the feasibility of the procedure and identify the biopsy technique that best corresponds to the patient's situation. Indeed, this consultation will allow you to have contact with the radiologist who will do the biopsy. He will give you an idea of the progress of the procedure and answer all your questions. This allows you to become familiar with the location and the doctor, which further reduces stress. Before the day of the biopsy, no preparation is necessary. Fasting is not recommended; however, a small snack is advised.

Thyroid biopsy procedure in Turkey

On the day of the biopsy, you will lie down on the examination table. Thus, three or four samples will be taken. Once the samples have been processed, a small bandage will be applied and kept for a few hours. In addition, the thyroid nodule biopsy takes about 30 minutes, the fine needle aspiration thyroid micro biopsy is a little painful because the needle is very fine. It does not require anesthesia. Therefore, the pain felt is similar to the discomfort in taking blood. Moreover, you may have the feeling that the needle is still in the neck after the gesture, and it only lasts a few minutes.

Postoperative results of the surgical operation

Laboratory analysis often takes about three to four weeks.
The healthcare team will put a bandage on the area where the needle was inserted. To ensure that bleeding is minimal, the doctor will pressure the dressing for a few minutes.  You can leave once the needle biopsy procedure is complete. In some cases, the healthcare team will monitor you for a few hours to make sure the biopsy is free from complications.
If you are given a sedative or general venous anesthesia, you will be transferred to a relaxing location to wait for the effects to wear off.
To properly protect the area where the needle biopsy is performed, the dressing should be kept in place as directed. Pain in the biopsy area is expected, but it usually goes away within two days or less.
The assessment will be addressed to the attending physician who will then comment on the results and advise you to give an ultrasound check-up a few weeks later, and regular monitoring for abnormalities or even surgery.

Complications to thyroid nodule biopsy

A biopsy has a low risk of bleeding and infection in the area where the needle is going to be inserted. This is because mild pain may have occurred after a needle biopsy, but it can usually be controlled with pain relievers.
Please contact your doctor immediately if you experience the following:

  • Fever
  • Pain at the biopsy site worsens or is not controlled with medication
  • Swelling of the biopsy part
  • Bleeding that does not stop even when a bandage is put on
