All about colostomy: Prices & Costs

A colostomy is a surgical connection between the colon (large intestine) and the abdomen. The purpose of a colostomy procedure is to prevent feces from passing through an affected or damaged area of the colon. Colostomy evacuations involve loose or formed stools, but also gases and odors.
Other facts include:
• A colostomy can be performed at almost any point in the colon.
• The area in which colostomy is practiced depends on medical reasons and is generally defined by the affected area of the colon.
• There are four types of colostomy, which can be temporary or permanent.

What is an ostomy bag?

An ostomy bag is a device placed on the stoma, collects the effluent from the colon. The pocket can be in the form of a one-piece or two-piece system.

Common reasons for the surgery

Colostomy surgery is performed when a portion of the intestine needs to be removed or bypassed. These procedures can be performed as part of treatment for the following reasons:
• Cancer of the colon, anus, or rectum
• Inflammatory bowel disease
• An intestinal obstruction
• Familial adenomatous polyposis
• A lesion that affects the intestine
• Diverticulitis
Congenital bowel defect

Different types of colostomy

A colostomy of the ascending handle

Perform ascending colostomy on ascending colon. Feces are fluid to semi-fluid and have digestive enzymes that can irritate the epidermis around the stoma. You may have to empty the bag four to six times a day.

The transverse handle

Perform a transverse colostomy on the transverse colon. The stool is generally fluid to semi-formed because the colon absorbs some of the water from the stool when it passes through the ascending colon. You may have to empty the bag four to six times a day.

The sigmoid handle

Perform a sigmoid colostomy on the sigmoid colon. The stool of a sigmoid colostomy is usually almost formed because almost all the water from the stool is absorbed when the stool passes through the ascending colon, the transverse colon, and the descending colon. You may have to empty your bag once or twice a day or every other day.

The post-operative phase of ostomy bag in Turkey

After the operation, the patient must stay in the hospital for a few days and get painkillers to feel good. He must drink liquids for 1 or 2 days first. Solid foods will gradually reintegrate.
The stoma usually swells immediately after the operation. It is soft, moist, reddish-pink. There is no sensation in the stoma, and it does not hurt the touch. As there are many blood vessels on the surface, it can bleed slightly if rubbed or wiped hard.
After a colostomy or ileostomy, the patient cannot get rid of his stool. He must put a bag on the stoma daily.

Medical instructions to follow

During your medical stay in the hospital, a nurse who specialized in ostomy treatment will teach you how to adapt and take care of the ostomy. Before returning home, the health care team or the nurse who specializes in ostomy will inform the patient about the following:
• How to change the dressing
• How to take a shower
• How and when to take the medication
• What to eat and drink
• What physical activity
• What to do if the patient has problems
• Frequency of follow-up with the surgeon

In case the colostomy is temporary, the medical team in Turkey will tell the patient how long he should keep the stoma. After a temporary colostomy, the stoma frequently remains in place for a few months. Once the rest of the large intestine is restored, the patient will undergo a second procedure to assemble the 2 extremities of the colon. This surgery is called anastomosis. The surgeon will also close the opening on the abdomen. Following this second surgery, the patient will become able to evacuate his stool through the anus normally.
